Why social media matters for your business

Why social media matters for your business

Why is social media important for businesses? Because great products aren’t enough. Learn how social media builds visibility, trust and recognition.

Imagine opening a bakery.

You spend weeks perfecting your sourdough. You paint the walls. Buy beautiful plates. Choose the nicest logo. Print menus. Maybe even spend a small fortune on that espresso machine everyone suddenly seems to have.

Then opening day arrives.

You unlock the door. You wait.

Nothing happens.

Turns out people don’t magically know your bakery exists.

Shocking, I know.

Yet that’s exactly how many businesses treat social media.

“Our website is live.”

Great.

“We’ve got an amazing product.”

Even better.

“People will find us.”

Will they?

TL;DR

Social media matters because having a great business isn’t enough if nobody knows about it. Your customers are already spending time on social platforms, discovering brands, researching products and deciding which businesses they trust.

Good social media marketing isn’t about posting as much as possible. It’s about consistently being useful, relevant and recognisable so that when someone needs what you sell, they remember you.

Your customers are already on social media

Thirty years ago, if you wanted attention, you bought a newspaper ad. Or a billboard. Or maybe a radio commercial.

Today, a huge amount of that attention lives on people’s phones.

More specifically, somewhere between a cat video, someone’s holiday pictures, a recipe they’ll never cook and a Reel explaining how eating only blueberries before 8:13 AM will change their life.

You’re competing with that. Good luck.

But that’s exactly why businesses can’t simply ignore social media.

DataReportal’s Digital 2025 research found that half of adult social media users visit social platforms to learn more about brands and see the content they publish. Instagram, Facebook and TikTok are all widely used for brand and product research.

Social media ads are also one of the leading ways people discover new brands and products globally, and they’re the number-one source of brand awareness among internet users aged 16 to 34.

So no, your business doesn’t necessarily need to be everywhere.

But it should probably be somewhere.

Social media isn’t really about social media

People sometimes say:

“I don’t really like social media.”

Fair enough.

You don’t have to enjoy fake urgency, perfect-looking lives or posts promising that “THIS ONE SECRET” will completely transform your business.

Especially when the secret turns out to cost €997.

But social media itself is just… people.

People looking for solutions. People killing five minutes while waiting for the train. People looking for inspiration. People laughing. People learning. And yes, people buying.

If your customers are people (and unless you’re selling exclusively to highly intelligent dolphins, they probably are) it’s worth understanding where those people spend their attention.

Social media helps people remember your business

Here’s where many businesses get social media wrong.

They think social media is somewhere they post.

It’s actually somewhere people decide whether you’re worth remembering.

There’s a big difference.

Nobody wakes up thinking:

“I really hope my local accountant posts today.”

People don’t follow businesses simply because those businesses exist. They pay attention when a business consistently gives them something valuable.

That might be:

  • useful advice
  • an answer to a question
  • entertainment
  • inspiration
  • a recognisable point of view
  • or simply a reminder that the business exists

Do that consistently and something important happens.

People start recognising you.

And when they eventually need your product or service, your business has a much better chance of coming to mind.

Forget the social media hacks

This is also why follower counts aren’t everything.

An account with 600 relevant followers who know and trust the business can be far more valuable than an account with 60,000 people who scroll straight past every post.

Attention without trust is just scrolling.

And you don’t need a complicated collection of social media hacks to fix that.

You don’t need a “secret” posting time.

You don’t need to jump onto every new trend.

And you definitely don’t need to post three Reels a day while dancing next to your product.

Although I’d happily watch a lawyer try.

Good social media marketing is much less exciting:

Know who you’re helping.

Create something useful.

Keep showing up.

Repeat.

That’s basically it.

Consistency beats constantly posting

The platforms will change. Algorithms will change. Buttons will move. New content formats will appear.

But the basic principle behind social media marketing stays surprisingly simple.

People are more likely to consider businesses they recognise and trust.

Your job isn’t therefore to fill a content calendar for the sake of filling a content calendar. It’s to create enough useful, relevant content that your audience gradually becomes familiar with your business.

For social media managers, that’s an important distinction too.

The goal isn’t:

“We published 20 posts this month.“

It’s:

“More of the right people know who we are and what we can help them with.“

That’s a much better reason to post.

So, why social media?

Because people can’t choose a business they don’t know exists.

Social media gives businesses an opportunity to become visible, demonstrate expertise, build familiarity and stay in people’s minds.

Not by shouting louder.

Not by chasing every trend.

And not by posting for the sake of posting.

By showing up with something useful often enough to be remembered.

Your action step for today

Look at your next planned social media post and ask one simple question:

Will this give someone a reason to remember us?

If the answer is no, don’t just post more.

Post something better.
